Stage Hypnosis vs. Hypnotherapy: Not Even Close!
“So wait… do you make people cluck like chickens?” 😄
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that one! As a hypnotherapist, I get why people ask. Most folks’ only exposure to hypnosis is watching someone on stage making audience members do silly stuff. Let me break down the difference.
Think of stage hypnosis like a magic show. You’ve probably seen it – someone brings up volunteers, puts them “under,” and suddenly they’re dancing like Elvis or forgetting their own name. It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and honestly? It makes for a great night out! But that’s all it is – entertainment.
Now, hypnotherapy? That’s a whole different ball game.
Instead of making you do the chicken dance (promise!), we’re using that same relaxed state to help you work through real stuff. Maybe you’re dealing with anxiety that’s keeping you up at night. Or perhaps you’ve got this voice in your head saying “you’re not good enough” and you’re ready to tell it to take a hike.
Here’s how it actually works:
You know that feeling when you’re so wrapped up in a good book or movie that you kind of forget where you are? That’s pretty similar to the state we use in hypnotherapy. You’re totally aware and in control – no zombie stuff happening here! We’re just accessing that deeper part of your mind where a lot of our automatic thoughts and behaviors hang out.
Think of it this way: Stage hypnosis is like a flashy firework show – spectacular but over quickly. Hypnotherapy is more like learning to play an instrument – it creates lasting change that becomes part of who you are.
I’ve seen people walk out of sessions feeling lighter, like they’ve finally put down a heavy backpack they didn’t even know they were carrying. Whether it’s building confidence, crushing that presentation anxiety, or finally breaking free from old habits that aren’t serving you anymore – that’s what this work is all about.
